Something clicked while I was watching the movie Portrait de la Jeune Fille En Feu. Watching that movie felt like watching a painting from the 1700’s start to move slowly at first, and come to life.

What struck a chord with me with that movie, is that despite being an era-specific picture, the general ambiance didn’t feel “old” or bygone. The way of life portrayed didn’t feel outdated, it actually seemed natural and mundane and delightful. Although it represents a (very) slow-paced story of two women leisurely coming to terms with their identities, their activities of walking down the beach or making a soup in the kitchen weren’t of a bygone era. Instead, they were poetically common. For me, this had much to do with the beauty of the styling work that went into every scene. The context becomes a gorgeous frame, and makes someone like me simply fall in love with this portrait of a way of life.

So here I am, a fellow artist, attempting to capture a portrait of my own context, with my own legacy, and with my own objects sitting at the studio in the winter time.
